What we made this week – Toilet roll octopus and under the sea crayon and wash pictures

It was another really wet week so no outing to the woods again

We first made some very colourful Octopus with toilet rolls, taking inspiration from here

The Woodchips choose what colour they wanted to use, these were very quick to make but make me smile each time I look at ours.

We then got the Woodchips to draw on white A3 paper with crayons, things that lived under the sea.  Once finished they covered them in a blue wash for the sea.  (slight lesson learnt that the wash needed to be more water and less paint to work a bit better. but as usual the Woodchips didn’t mind!)

What we made this week – Farmyard pictures and marshmallow crispie things

We first went out into the (closed off) car park with chalk and the Woodchips joined in drawing big pictures and some did Hop Scotch

Then we came inside and using the Easter Bunny lollipop recipe from Nurture Store as inspiration we used various cookie cutter shapes and then the Woodchips decorated them with icing and sprinkles.

I found out quite how sticky melted marshmallow is too!

I found great foam animal shapes and then left various card, paper and other arts bits on the table for the Woodchips to create.  Here is a selection.

What we made this week – a woodland collage & kitchen roll daffodils

We went on a walk to the woods and the Woodchips has to choose some things they liked to add to the bag to bring back and made a collage.  The finished product was quite interesting, and we found out no amount of PVA glue makes large sticks attach to paper.

We then made daffodils from paper plates, egg boxes and kitchen rolls

The centres are egg boxes, the flower & leaves from papers plates and the stem a kitchen roll.

What we made this week – Mother’s Day Cards & Cressheads

The Woodchips stuck the parts of the flower together and then did finger painting to decorate.  Then when it was snack time I turned the flowers into cards.

Homemade pre-schooler flower card

We then found a great use for the washing liquid gel pots by making them into faces and sewing cress seeds to give the faces some hair.

What we made this week – Sock puppets and biscuits

We went for a walk in the woods and looks at the trails on the ground

Then we made some biscuits in one big bowl with everyone having a turn to add something and mix it in.

Then we made sock puppets (a good tip being put the bare sock over a kitchen roll when applying the bits as it is easier than it being flat)

What we made this week – Egg box crocodiles & kitchen roll rockets

The weather was beautiful today and we went for a long walk in the woods in the sunshine

We then made kitchen roll rockets (we decided they fitted in with Woodcraft thinking as they ran on bio fuel)

Then we made egg box crocodiles

See authentic jungle with the big cat next to the crocodile

What we made this week – bird feeders & foot decorations

We went to the food for each Woodchip to select a stick for the bottom of their bird feeder

The idea for the bird feeder was from the Mini Eco site

These are the feeders waiting to cool upside down before removing the plastic cup

And hanging the feeder up for the birds to enjoy at home

As a game to see who had the biggest feet we all drew around our feet (adults too!) and then decorated them.  We lined them up to see who had the biggest and smallest feet.

What we made – week 17

After circle time I read Elmer to the group, with the subtle message that we are all different.  We then made elephants from paper plates.

All the children had the same materials, and the wonderful thing was that they all made very different elephants.

Whilst we waiting for the Elephants to dry the Woodchips played with the homemade sensory play-doh.

I made 4 varieties using a recipe from here adding different food colouring and edible flavouring for smells

  • green peppermint glitter play doh
  • brown chocolate glitter play doh (added cocoa powder)
  • red citrus glitter play doh
  • yellow vanilla play doh

The children asked if they were allowed to mix them up and they were!
